The Peaky Blinders are actually based on a true Birmingham gang that earned their name from a tendency to sew razor blades into their caps in order to blind their victims and render them an easy prey for petty theft. The real Peaky Blinders gang built a criminal empire on illegal betting, protection rackets and Birmingham’s black market. The Peaky Blinders Series main characters, the Shelby family are probably a fiction, but nonetheless, each and every one of them feels like a true Peaky Blinder.
The Modern Anti-Heroes
The camera and effects add up to the grim, and dark, yet strong and untamed ambient and emotion of the Birmingham’s streets. The Peaky Blinders are created by Steven Knight. The main character is the relentless and genial Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy. The intensity and darkness of the main character go quite well with the current popular heroes, the so-called anti-heroes that are just, relentless, somewhat cruel to the world and yet so romantic to the weak and the ones they love. Similar features are also visible in the character of Doctor House and many other “anti-heroes” of the modern cinema. To be honest, if any of us met these people (their characters, not actors) we would hate them, and justly because they are in fact narcissistic and cruel. However, in the popular TV shows and cinema, we always fall in love with them.
Writing, Camera, Actors – A Win-win Scenario
The writing is simply breathtaking. One could argue that some plots that Tommy plans are a bit overreaching and exaggerated because no one in their right mind could plan all of that no matter how intelligent he or she is. But the fact is that Tommy is brave, and you know that saying that luck follows the brave (luck also follows the drunk and the fools too). Saying this, Tommy does hold good cards but he is simply put like a cat, he could and maybe should, and probably would die many times in the real world. Yet, there are people who fall from 10,000 meters and survive. The strength of the human body is yet to be fully discovered and luck is a curious thing.
The show has a unique style of period drama that is based on strong storytelling, a deft cinematic juxtaposition of style, a combination of old-fashioned elegance with the grime working-class struggle and violence. Because of this, Peaky Blinders has a lot of loyal followers, and the Peaky Blinders cast is continually being added big names.
The Family Bond
The three brothers who are alongside their aunt, running the company are all complete opposites and yet, they sometimes feel like one. They are a true family with their own internal dramas and conflicts, envy and anger, and yet, they always manage to overcome their problems and be there for each other. If we put aside the criminal endeavour, they are a pretty good functioning family and everyone would take a bullet for the other ones.
This is not a superficial show, the characters are deep and the actors are brilliant. Paul Anderson, who plays Arthur Shelby, the eldest brother, has gone from jealousy to anger and finally redemption seeking through religion and family. His path is quite troublesome and his anger has deep roots that go to the World War I. The same goes for the main character Tommy Shelby and the third brother, John Shelby (Joe Cole). All three of them were in France during the World War I. Tommy Shelby, as implied numerous times throughout the show, used to smile all of the time before the war. Tommy served in World War I with the rank of Sergeant Major and was decorated for bravery. His experiences cast ongoing nightmares to Tommy who still copes with the past.
The Strength of the Women
One should never overlook the importance of women in life and this show fully portrays it. Helen McCrory plays Polly Shelby, the aunt of Tommy and his siblings. She is a treasurer of the Peaky Blinders and she always knows when Tommy is hiding something from her. Thus, she is the first to find out everything and with all her wits and strength, she has a truly elegant and feminine side. She is without a doubt one of the strongest Shelby’s and she ran the whole company while the brothers were at war. In Series 2, she reunites with her son whom she would give her life for.
Every season of the Peaky Blinders provides one female character that Tommy falls in love with, and Grace (Annabelle Wallis), May Carleton (Charlotte Riley), and Tatiana Petrovna (Gaite Jansen) have something in common. One thing that connects all of these women (if we separate from pure beauty and the physical) is the strength. All three are strong persons who hold their ground no matter what happens.
The Thrill and Drama
The show is pretty unpredictable and one twist has three twists waiting behind the corner. It seems like Tommy always has an Ace in his pocket for every situation. Tommy is a silent type, the mastermind behind all moves that keep the family together and yet, most of the time, he keeps secrets from them. He does so in order to protect them. The Peaky Blinders Tom Hardy is a completely new Tom Hardy. His act is as brutal as his character is.
Tom plays Alfie Solomons, and he comes into the show in the Peaky Blinders season 2 when Tommy and the gang decide to spread to London. Alfie is cunning and deceitful, and he has no mercy whatsoever. His impulsive and creepy behaviour portrays a person whom you certainly don’t want to meet in your life because it might be the last thing you do. The show also featured an amazing performance by Sam Neill who played Chester Campbell, an Ulster Protestant Irish Major who works for the British Government. Winston Churchill also appears on the show which further tingles one’s imagination.
Peaky Blinders Season 3 Recap
The last season started with a wedding of now Peaky Blinders Grace and Tommy Shelby. Russians came to the series and brought the Russian Roulette with them. A strange group of powerful men, who saved his life at the end of season 2, forced Tommy to plan a robbery for them. They wanted to end good relations with the Russians and Tommy managed to see through all of it and play his cards properly. His wife, Grace, was killed which left him heartbroken and devastated with the young Duchess Tatiana Petrovna easing his pains. Tommy’s son was kidnapped and at the end, everything seemed good. However, the very few last minutes gave us a new shocking drama. Tommy condemned four members of his family to jail.
