Peaky Blinders Season 4 Recap with TVMucho

How will Peaky Blinders Cope with the loss of their brother

Tue, November 28th, 2017

Season 4, episode 1 gave us a heartbreaking cliffhanger, John and Michael got shot and it looked like John won’t make it. Sadly, even though most of us were waiting for a miraculous life-bringer, John didn’t make it. How are Tommy and the rest of Peaky Blinders going to cope with this? Even more, how are fans going to cope with the death of John, one of the most loved members of the Peaky Blinders gang?

Mafia Drive-by is efficient as ever

John Shelby Peaky Blinders

Farewell John Shelby (Joe Cole), shot dead on Christmas morning “on his own f–kin’ doorstep.” At the end of episode 1 of Season 4 of Peaky Blinders, John and Michael (Finn Cole) were shot down by mafia gunfire. Michael survived, but we said goodbye to John in episode 2. John loved saying “We’re the Peaky f–kin’ Blinders” and those were more-less his last f–kin’ words. The Shelbys’ mourn over John’s body in episode 2. John’s widow Esme (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) is furious with Tommy and she took their six children “on the road to live with decent people”.

As she was going away, she gave a gipsy hex to Tommy saying: “They’ll never know the cursed side of this family. No peace for you, ever”. Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) used John’s traditional gipsy funeral fire as a bait. The Italians did attempt an assassination during the funeral, but cunning Tommy was expecting them. Still, John is gone, and he is the first of the Shelby siblings to die. Stakes are higher than ever in season 4.

Aiden Gillen, aka Littlefinger from Game of Thrones, is properly introduced

Aidan Gillen, who is best known as Game of Thrones’ Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish has an appearance. Tommy is in desperate need of reinforcements and sends for a psychopathic gipsy Aberama Gold. Johnny Dogs described Gold as “a savage, a heathen”.

Tommy answered: “We don’t need good men, we need bad men”. Hopefully, Tommy won’t come to regret this decision. The first time we see Gold, he and his son Bonnie (Jack Rowan) are killing the two snipers that were aiming at John’s funeral. Gold’s opening line is: “£500 each, £1,000 for the brace. Where do you want them?” Aidan Gillen is known for his accents and he managed to pitch one between Wales and Westeros, brilliant.

Gold was tipping his hat to Aunt Pol (Helen McCrory) and trying to buy the scrapyard that is owned by Charlie Strong (Ned Dennehy). There is something suspicious about him, and we got the feeling as he could be the future enemy.

Jack Rowan – The new Peaky Blinder

Jack Rowan, who played Sam in the Channel drama Born to Kill and is also a champion boxer off-screen is playing the son of Gold (Aidan Gillen). As Aberama Gold said proudly: “He’s got his dad’s strength and his mother’s temper.” Bonnie added: “I could fight a f–kin’ tree and knock it out, Mr Shelby.”

Bonnie is ambitious and he needs Tommy’s help to succeed. We saw him in action, as he knocked down the local heavyweight Billy Mills quite easily. Arthur and Tommy sent him for training and gave him a cap as a welcome to the Peaky Blinders.

Changretta started his vengeance, but what does Tommy have to say

Episode 2 of Season 4 Peaky Blinders was full of showdowns and one of them was the one between Tommy and Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody).

Changretta was posing as a French trade delegate and arrived for a meeting with Tommy. Tommy figured out who he truly was. Brody was brilliant with Brando and Pacino coming out of him as he whispered about “an organisation of a different dimension” to Tommy. Tommy and Luca agreed to “fight with honour: no civilians, no children, no police”.

Polly’s Comeback and Michael’s Deal

The matriarch of the Shelby family and of the Peaky Blinders was still behaving erratically at the beginning of the episode. However, she made a deal with Michael, her son, and had an epiphany during John’s funeral. She realized that “when you’re dead already, you’re free” and with these words, the consigliere made a comeback.

She is fearless now which makes her even more dangerous than ever before. As for Michael, he took four bullets but managed to survive. Surgeons “sewn him up like a football” and he was begging Polly for a cigarette and asking for a gun “small enough to hide in the chamberpot”. Michael is a sitting duck in the hospital and he made a deal with Polly. Once he gets recovered, he and Polly are going to emigrate to Australia. Are they truly going to go?

Ada is back but what is awaiting her

Ada Shelby or Thorne (Sophie Rundle) is a person of interest to the intelligence services. They sent seven officers from London. The officers are there to investigate Ada, who is a suspect in the organisation of a Bolshevik revolution in Brum.

Inspector Moss (Tony Pitts) left his message with Linda (Kate Phillips). Linda is already unhappy with the relocation to Small Heath and Arthur’s return to the Peaky Blinders. What will she do with the message?

Possible continuing of an old romance

May Carleton (Charlotte Riley), a horse trainer and Tommy’s old romance made a short return. The “Didicoy” stable lad Curly (Ian Peck) told her that “the Mafia are after Tommy” and she rolled her eyes and said “Dear God”. They are certainly a mismatched couple, but can the romance between Tommy Shelby and May continue? Find out more in the next episodes of the Peaky Blinders and read the previous review here.
