The ambitious Avengers: Infinity War saw the biggest collaboration of superheroes in cinematic history. So, Marvel fans can’t help but wonder – what will they do next? Will they be able to save the fan-favourites that faded to dust? Will Thanos ever be destroyed? And will everyone survive the battle for the universe?
Don’t worry, after a year of waiting you can finally see what happens to everyone in the sequel Avengers: Endgame which is coming out this week! This is actually earlier than audiences originally believed as the intended release date was the 3rd of May, 2019 but it has now been pushed forward to the 26th of April 2019. To avoid disappointment, you should book your tickets in advance – the pre-release tickets are now available and have been since the 2nd of April.
So, we have all the intel of everything that you need to know about the latest Avengers movie before you go see it. Best part? Absolutely no spoilers!
The original intention for the two movies was for them to be named ‘Infinity War Part 1’ and ‘Infinity War Part 2’ but the title was revealed in a trailer. It has been suggested that the production team were trying to hide the name from fans as they hinted at a few different names, leaving fans to speculate. The production team wanted to keep the name a secret for as long as they could as they worried that it would ruin the finale of Infinity War. But as it turns out, it was vague enough of a title that fans were none the wiser to the shock ending.
The final name ‘Avengers: Endgame’ was lifted from one of Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) final lines in Infinity War where he states that they (the heroes) were in ‘endgame’ now. But what does it mean? It’s the culmination of all 22 movies that feature in the current arc or ‘universe; but it also refers to the final fight that will logically only leave one victor. Whether that is the Avengers as a whole or Thanos is left to be seen. So, Endgame fits perfectly.
The end-credits scene which Marvel is renowned for showed the sigil of Captain Marvel, a teaser to a character who we believe will play a big part in Endgame. Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson, will definitely show up as she has been shown in the trailer footage that Marvel has released. The trailer which was released on the 2nd of April also shows the reunion of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr., also known as Iron Man) and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), Iron Man and Captain America (Chris Evans) making amends and finally, the Avengers preparing for their brawl against titan Thanos (Josh Brolin).
Co-director Joe Russo says of Endgame that the ‘spirit’ and tone of it is far different from Infinity War which aided his decision to keep the films as two separate movies. He didn’t want to run the risk of making the same film two times and wanted there to be a distinct difference between them.
Of course, everyone has been trying to guess and theorise what will happen within the fourth instalment of the Avengers. Rumours abound that the only way for the fallen heroes to be saved is for the remaining ones to travel back in time to the original Avengers film to track where everything began with Thanos’ need for destruction. There is also speculation that Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) will use this time-hopping ability to better control his tantruming counter-part, the Hulk.
However, that is all speculation in this current moment in time as Marvel’s team (including the actors) are tight-lipped about the plot of the movie. But what we know for certain is that the heroes that were missed in Infinity War such as Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) will be returning to fight alongside new addition Captain Marvel.
The trailer also revealed that following the loss of 50% of the population, the world has had some dramatic knock-on effects. We also know that Tony is left trapped on Titan following the Guardians of the Galaxy and his protege Peter Parker disappearing into literally thin air.
Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes) has also alluded to the fact that all of the Marvel heroes that we know and love could be reunited in one location at one time but this hasn’t been officially confirmed as of yet. Chris Evans (Captain America) has revealed that he was very emotional when watching the first hour of the movie, stating that he ‘choked up’ three times.
On a lighter note, Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man) has disproved the fan theories that had been suggest stating that none of the ones that he has seen so far have been correct. Especially the theory that Thanos’ demise will come from Ant-Man entering Thanos’ body via his back package and planting an explosive inside him. He said that there was no chance that anybody could guess what was going to happen. The directors, the Russo Brothers, have backed him up by swearing to the fans that the movie will be ‘surprising.’ They have also begged the audience that once screening begins that they will not spread spoilers.
Avengers: Endgame will be a grand length of three hours and two minutes long precisely which lends itself to being the longest Marvel film that has been released as of yet. This has left fans feeling worried that they may not be able to sit through the whole screening without going to the toilet or wanting to get another snack or drink.
But we’re sure they’ll manage – not a single moment of this film is to be missed!
All of the beloved actors who have portrayed the Avengers will be returning including the headliners – Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow). Josh Brolin will also be reprising his role of Thanos. The particular characters that will be leading the team and having a larger role in Endgame are Captain America and Black Widow which fans will be excited for as they had smaller roles in Infinity War which focused more on Iron Man and Thor.
As we said earlier, Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) will also be joining the battle alongside Okoy (Danai Gurira), Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper/Sean Gunn). Recent posters have also nodded to the idea that Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) could have survived the gruesome massacre at the end of Thor: Ragnarok and beginning of Infinity War and fighting.
The Russo Brothers said in an interview that any hero which was missed out of Infinity War could possibly be playing a more important role in Endgame, meaning the underdogs could be exactly what the Avengers need to save their friends and the rest of the world. The directors said that they put their heads together and worked out ways to bring everybody in without cluttering the narrative. In the end, they said that they were satisfied with the results.
