Travel Man: 48 Hours in Athens

Monday 8.30pm – 9pm, Channel 4

Comedian Richard Ayoade returns with his unique, offbeat tourism show and in this first edition is joined by Dawn French as the pair spend two days in the Greek capital, Athens. The duo visit Lake Vouliagmeni which was rumoured to be the favourite bathing spot of goddess Athena, enjoy some local doughnuts and take in the spectacular sights of the Acropolis. They also tackle a 14-course tasting menu at a temple to molecular gastronomy before attempting to burn off the calories with some javelin and discus training on an Olympic tour.

 

The World’s Busiest Train Stations

Monday 9pm – 10pm, Channel 5

This episode of the busiest train stations in the world travels to Calcutta and the Howrah Terminal. The station is India’s busiest and serves one of the fastest growing cities on the planet. The manic Monday morning rush hour tests ticket inspector Pranab as he seeks out the fare dodgers amongst the tidal wave of commuters. Elsewhere, a signal failure halts the progress of India’s most prestigious rail service – the Rajdhani Express, the luxury overnight train that goes from Calcutta to Delhi.

 

Surgeons: At the Edge of Life

Tuesday 9pm – 10pm, BBC2

The expert maxillofacial team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham plan a marathon operation on former police officer Loretta. Surgeon Tim Martin and his operating partner Sat Parmer believe they will be the first UK surgeons to operate on the strange disease Loretta finds herself suffering from. Nine months earlier Tim met Loretta at his clinic where she was suffering from a mysterious condition that was destroying muscles and bones in one side of her face, subsequently causing her mouth to fuse shut. It took much detective work and investigation but Tim found the cause – an extremely rare condition called tumefactive fibroinflammatory disease. This disease is so rare only 50 cases have ever been documented worldwide.

 

First Dates

Tuesday 10pm – 11pm, Channel 4

Maitre d’ Fred Sirieix returns in a new series of the restaurant based dating show. In this episode 32 year old Krystal, an owl sanctuary volunteer, worries her chattiness and energetic personality scares men off. Her date with James, 43, starts well when she gives him a knitted owl but will the date go downhill when she learns what he does for a living? Other singles to the table tonight include Georgia, a recruitment assistant seeking her dream girl and a 20 year old beautician seeking Mr Right.

 

Earth From Space

Wednesday 9pm – 10pm, BBC1

A new perspective of life on earth is taken as cameras in space reveals new discoveries and explore the most remote and desolate habitats on the planet. In this first episode cameras follow a herd of elephants as they struggle through a drought, reveals colonies of penguins previously unknown to science and ice rings which could pose a serious threat to seal pups.

 

Naked Beach

Thursday 8pm – 9pm, Channel 4

Three under confident people with body image issues visit a retreat on a Greek Island where they are encouraged to embrace and feel good in their own skin by a cast of regulars who wear nothing but body paint. In this episode David learns to ignore what other people think and accept his body shape, Jolie faces her vitiligo skin condition and Danielle begins to feel more confident with her curves.

 

Doctor Strange

Friday 8.30pm – 10.40pm, ITV

After his hands are damaged in a car crash, an American surgeon seeks help from mystics, but he winds up becoming a warrior in an inter-dimensional battle between the forces of darkness and light. Marvel Comic fantasy adventure starring Mads Mikkelsen, Rachel McAdams and Benedict Cumberbatch.

 

Ninja Warrior UK

Saturday 6.30pm – 7.30pm, ITV

Ambitious and dynamic competitions from all across the UK test their, speed, balance and courage as they tackle the Ninja Warrior obstacle course. Those who complete the course must use their reserves and adrenaline to take on the final task – scaling a tower named Mount Midoriyama. Only one can win the title of Ninja Warrior UK. Hosted by Chris Kamara, Rochelle Hines and Ben Shephard.

 

The Shallows

Saturday 9pm – 10.40pm, Channel 4

Reflecting on her life, a medical school dropout travels to her deceased mothers favourite beach in Mexico to do some surfing. Unbeknownst to her she strays into the surfer, she strays into the hunting territory of a giant Great White Shark, finding herself stranded 200 yards from shore on a tiny island. As the tide moves in, her sanctuary from the patrolling predator starts to disappear and she faces a life or death struggle to get back to dry land safely. Stars Oscar Jaenada and Blake Lively.

 

Victoria

Sunday 9pm – 10pm, ITV

After an attempt is made on her life, Queen Victoria learns the would-be assassin found his motivation in the political unrest dividing Ireland. Determined to resolve the conflict she arranges a Royal visit to the island, despite her husband Albert’s objections. The trip also reveals a lot more to Lord Palmerston and his unconventional marriage when the Queen meets his wife.
